Baja Revival
Driving about One and one half hours down” Highway 1” alongside the Pacific Ocean was beautiful. I had preached at a Hispanic Conference in San Diego just the day before. Now we crossed over at Tijuana, into Mexico, more specifically the Baja Peninsula to preach in Zapata a little dusty town about 4 hours into the Peninsula to a church of about 600 Indians that only a year before had been running 250. The Commission that had been given to me was to get Abraham Teklemariam to Baja because of the great revival that was going on there. They wanted to combine the momentum of the great revival in Ethiopia (2.2. Million Saints in 5000 churches that are superintended by Abraham’s Father).
Efraim Valverde in San Diego had a mandate from God to make this happen. Abraham flew from Chicago and met me in Waco. We flew out on Friday from Austin. The flight started out a little scary the plane shook down the runway before we even took off, Abraham thought maybe the pilot was either young or inebriated. We landed in Salt Lake City, Utah and our plane was delayed about 2 hours. I did not know it but I was supposed to open the conference in San Diego by preaching Friday night but I did not get there in time so I preached on Saturday.
We spent about 17 hours in Church Saturday and Sunday Morning headed to Mexico. David Fuller from Waco, Bro. Halfacre from Louisville Mississippi, Abraham, Myself, and the Brethren from California headed to Mexico about 7:00 AM. Like I said at the beginning the drive along the Pacific was peaceful and beautiful, however when we got into the next 2 hours of the trip it was dangerous to say the least. Bro. Valverde was driving the car in front and we followed in a SUV driven by Pastor Dante Flores and he drove 85-90 miles an hour, there were no guardrails on the roads and crosses that showed evidence of many deaths over the side of the mountain. I was never so glad to get to my destination just in time for church. I did a lot of praying and fretting over the drive back through the same mountains at night.
The Church in Zapata was full of the most humble people that are so in love with God. There were probably 350 children and teenagers that made up the choir and ran around the church with flags. We all had the opportunity to minister and it was an honor. The service went on for hours but it only seemed a few moments. The Youth choir sang a song and Abraham said that they were singing in Ethiopian saying “witchcraft is coming down” and “be strong and fight the battle”. I experienced something at the end of the service that was sheer joy. The young people began to dance together and then they came back and got us and we danced. Now I have danced before the Lord but this was community dancing and was a custom there. It was such an awesome joy and unity to do this.
There is indeed a great revival in Baja. Pastor Sanchez is a very humble man. There is probably nobody in the church with any more money than it takes to exist day by day. I am sure I could safely say that there is not one savings account among the 600 people yet the joy of the Lord in evident.
I want to share with you a series of events that made me know it was the will of God for me to go to Baja. David Fuller and I had traveled together working our way to the Apostolic World Christian Fellowship (AWCF) World Conference in Evansville, Indiana in May 2005.
I had just been appointed the Secretary of International Ministries and was excited to be there. We stopped at a store in Nashville so I could get a tablet to take note on and in the front of it was a map of North America and I got fixated on Baja California Mexico and kept repeating “ wow! look, the Baja Peninsula”.
We arrived in Evansville and at the end of one of the services I saw a small Hispanic man standing by himself while hundreds of others stood in little groups talking and fellowshipping. I don’t like to see anyone left out so I walked up and greeted him in Spanish, I only knew a little bit of Spanish and he looked disappointed when he found out. The next day I saw him standing with other men and I walked up and said to the interpreter please tell this man that I am sorry I could not communicate with him and they said “wait he wants to tell you something, he wants you to come preach in Baja California, Mexico. And I told them about what had happened with the tablet and they said, “Brother it is evident that you need to come to Baja”.
A few months later Bishop Fuller went to San Diego to preach a conference and they invited him to Baja and he suggested to them that I get to go, not remembering the episode with the map. And it just happened to be the same man that was the Pastor that I had tried to talk to. So I knew that I had been in the will of God. We have many invitations to preach around the World. I am going back to South Wales to preach there and in England along with two of my daughters, Savannah and Sabrina. Please continue to pray for us and if God lays it on your heart to give I assure you the money is spent wisely. We get out as cheap as we can on these trips. We shop for tickets and usually stay in people’s homes.
It has been 7 months since I went full time and God has met every need. He pays for every trip. And I am confident that I am in the will of God by doing what I am doing at this time.
God Bless You
